Dentures are a real cost for many families, and Work and Income (WINZ) may be able to help. The support does not always work the way people expect, so here is the honest picture in plain English.
What WINZ can actually help with
WINZ can help some people on a low income or a benefit with the cost of immediate and essential dental treatment. The main support is a Special Needs Grant of up to $1,000 in any 52 week period, and this money does not have to be paid back. To be considered you need to be 16 or over, a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, and living in New Zealand. WINZ also looks at what you and your partner earn and any savings or assets you hold, so it is income and asset tested.
You do not need to be on a benefit to apply, and many people on a low income qualify. The final decision always sits with WINZ, not with us. Dentures can be funded through this grant in some situations, and in other cases WINZ may offer an Advance of Benefit instead, which is a payment you pay back over time. WINZ decides which option applies to you.
Why dentures usually cost more than the grant
Full or partial dentures often cost more than $1,000, so the grant may cover part of the treatment rather than all of it. If your treatment costs more than the grant, WINZ may look at whether the work can be staged over time, or whether a lower cost option would still meet your needs.
You can apply more than once within a 52 week period, up to the $1,000 limit for the non-recoverable grant. It helps to know that the grant is counted over any 52 week period rather than a calendar year, so timing can matter if you have used part of it recently. We will always give you a written quote first, so you can see the full cost before anything begins and there are no surprises.
Partial, full and immediate dentures, and repairs
Dr Simran Chauhan, our Principal Dentist, provides full dentures, partial dentures, relines and repairs. If a tooth needs to come out first, an immediate denture can sometimes be fitted on the same day as the extraction, so you are not left without teeth while your gums heal.
Immediate dentures are a practical option, though it helps to understand that gums change shape as they settle over the following weeks and months. Because of this the fit usually needs adjusting, and a reline or a new denture may be needed later once healing is complete. We will talk you through what to expect for your own situation. We also carry out denture repairs and relines, often quickly, if an existing denture has cracked or become loose.
How we prepare your WINZ quote, step by step
You do not need WINZ approval before you book. The simplest path is to come in for an assessment so we can see what you need, then prepare the paperwork for your application.

- 2/We examine your mouth and take any X-rays that are needed.
- 3/We complete the dental treatment form with a written quote for WINZ.
- 4/You lodge the quote through MyMSD or at your local WINZ office.
- 5/Approval is often within a day or two, though times can vary.
- 6/Once approved, WINZ usually pays the clinic directly and we book your treatment.
Other ways to spread the cost
If the grant does not cover everything, there are other ways to manage the balance. We accept Afterpay, which splits the cost into smaller instalments, and Q Card. If you are a Southern Cross member, we offer Easy claim so any eligible amount can be processed at the time of your visit.
It is common to combine WINZ with one of these options, using the grant for the funded part and a payment plan for the rest.
