Needing a tooth out when you are in pain and short on cash is stressful. The good news is that extractions often qualify for help from Work and Income, because they count as immediate and essential treatment. Here is how it works, and what you can expect to pay.
Why extractions often qualify for WINZ help
Work and Income can help with dental treatment that is immediate and essential, meaning it deals with pain, infection, or a problem that will get worse if it is left. Tooth extractions usually fit that description, which is why they are one of the most commonly funded dental treatments. Cosmetic work, such as whitening or veneers, does not qualify.
You do not need to be on a benefit to apply, and many people on a low income are eligible. Work and Income looks at your income and any savings, and the final decision is theirs. If your tooth is sore, infected, or breaking down, it is worth asking us about a quote rather than putting it off and risking more pain.
What WINZ pays towards an extraction
The main help is a Special Needs Grant of up to $1,000 in any 52 week period for immediate and essential dental treatment. This grant does not have to be paid back. For a single extraction, it often covers the treatment and usually the assessment that goes with it.
If you need several teeth out, or extractions plus other essential work, the total can come to more than $1,000. In that case the grant covers part of it, and we look at how to stage the treatment or manage the balance. We will always show you a written quote first, so you know exactly where you stand before anything begins.
How the process works, step by step
You do not need Work and Income approval before you book. The simplest path is to come in for an assessment, then let us prepare the paperwork for you.

- 2/We examine the tooth and take any X-rays that are needed.
- 3/We complete the dental treatment form with a written quote for Work and Income.
- 4/You apply through MyMSD or your local office, using our quote.
- 5/Approval is often within a day or two, though times can vary.
- 6/Once approved, we book your extraction, and Work and Income usually pays us directly.
During and after your extraction
An extraction is a routine treatment, and the area is numbed first so you are comfortable during it. We are gentle with nervous patients, and we will explain each step as we go, so you are not left wondering what is happening.
Afterwards, we give you clear aftercare advice to help you heal, including how to manage the area, what to eat, and what to avoid for the first day or two. If anything does not feel right once you are home, such as ongoing bleeding or increasing pain, you are welcome to call us and we will help.
If you need more than one tooth out
Sometimes an extraction is only part of what is needed, or a gap is left that you will want to fill later. We can plan treatment in stages within the grant where that makes sense, and talk through your options honestly.
If you lose teeth, a partial denture can replace them so you can eat and smile with confidence, and Work and Income may help with that too. For anything beyond the grant, we accept Afterpay and Southern Cross, so the balance can be spread out. If your tooth was damaged in an accident, treatment may instead be covered by ACC, and we lodge that claim for you.

- Does WINZ cover wisdom teeth removal?
- It can, if the wisdom tooth is causing pain, infection or another essential problem. If it is straightforward we can often remove it, and if it is complex we will tell you honestly and may refer you on. We prepare the WINZ quote either way.
