WINZ dental grants, explained simply

Dental treatment can land at the worst possible time for the budget. If money is tight, Work and Income may be able to help with the cost of urgent dental care through a grant. Plenty of people who qualify never ask, so here's how it works, without any fuss.

What a WINZ dental grant is

Work and Income, part of the Ministry of Social Development, can provide help towards the cost of essential dental treatment for people on a low income. This is usually a Special Needs Grant, and for many people it does not have to be paid back, though larger amounts can sometimes be arranged as a loan that is repaid over time. Work and Income explains which applies in your situation.

There's a limit on how much can be granted in a year, and that figure is set by Work and Income and can change, so it's worth checking the current amount with them directly rather than relying on what a mate got last year. The grant is there to help with the cost of care that genuinely needs doing, not to cover everything on a wish list.

Who may be eligible

You don't have to be on a benefit to qualify. People receiving a benefit may be eligible, and so may people who are working but on a low income. It's assessed on your income and, in some cases, your cash assets, against the thresholds Work and Income uses at the time. Being a New Zealand citizen or resident who normally lives here is part of it too.

The honest answer to whether you'll qualify is that Work and Income decides, based on your circumstances on the day. Our part is to make the dental side easy, so that when you do ask them, you've got exactly what they need in hand. If you're not sure, there is no harm in asking Work and Income. The worst they can say is not this time.

It's for urgent and essential care

Grants are aimed at treatment that relieves pain, clears infection, or keeps your mouth working properly. Think an emergency appointment for a bad toothache, a filling, a tooth that needs taking out, treatment for an abscess, or repairs that let you eat and function. This is the sort of care that can't sensibly wait.

What grants generally won't cover is cosmetic work, the treatment you choose for looks rather than health. Teeth whitening, veneers and similar sit outside what a dental grant is for. That isn't a judgement on wanting those things, it's simply that the grant exists for essential care. If you're ever unsure which category your treatment falls into, ask us and we'll tell you straight.

The quote-then-approval process

The order of things trips people up, so here it is plainly. Work and Income will usually want a written quote from a dentist before they approve a grant. That means the first step is to see us so we can work out what's actually going on and what it will cost. Then you take that quote to Work and Income, either at a service centre, by phone, or through your MyMSD account, and they make the decision.

Once a grant is approved, the treatment goes ahead and payment is generally arranged between Work and Income, you and us, so you're not left holding the full bill up front. If the grant covers part of the cost and there's a remainder, we'll have talked that through with you beforehand. Nothing gets started without you knowing where you stand.

We prepare the quote free

Here's the part we want you to hear clearly: we prepare the written quote that Work and Income asks for at no charge. Getting the piece of paper you need to apply won't cost you a cent.

To know what to quote, we do need to see what's happening in your mouth, and a check-up with X-rays is how we get an accurate picture rather than a guess. Our new-patient exam with X-rays is $79, and if there's active pain we can look at that as an emergency visit. From there, the quote itself is free, and it's written so Work and Income can read it easily. If you're airport staff, the 15% airport discount can apply as well.

What to bring, and how we help

When you deal with Work and Income, it goes more smoothly if you have a few things ready. Having these on hand saves a second trip:

You are welcome to ring us before any of this and simply ask. We help people through the WINZ process regularly, and there is nothing awkward about it. If the treatment you need turns out to cost more than a single grant covers, we can talk through staging the work, doing the urgent parts first and the rest when you're able, so cost never becomes a reason to stay in pain. Everyone deserves to be out of pain and able to eat, and this is one of the ways New Zealand helps make that happen.

Quick questions

Do I have to be on a benefit to get a dental grant?
No. People on a benefit may be eligible, and so may people who are working on a low income. It's based on your income and circumstances, and Work and Income makes the decision.
Will a grant cover teeth whitening or veneers?
Generally no. Grants are for essential treatment that relieves pain, clears infection or keeps your mouth working. Cosmetic work sits outside what a dental grant is for.
How much will the quote cost me?
The written quote itself is free. To quote accurately we do need to see what's going on, and our new-patient exam with X-rays is $79. If you're in pain we can see you as an emergency.
Do I pay you and claim it back, or does WINZ pay you?
Once a grant is approved, payment is usually arranged between Work and Income, you and us, so you're not left covering the full amount up front. We'll explain exactly how it works for your treatment.
