Here's something a lot of Auckland families don't realise: dental care is free for teenagers right up to their 18th birthday. We provide that free care, and here's how it works, what's covered, and how to get your teen enrolled.

Free dental care to 18, explained

In New Zealand, basic dental care is free for children and teenagers up to their 18th birthday. Younger children are usually seen through the Community Oral Health Service, often at school or mobile clinics. From about Year 9, teenagers can be seen by a dentist who holds an agreement to provide this care, which is where we come in.

We hold a Combined Dental Agreement with Te Whatu Ora, so we can provide free care for teens from Year 9 up to their 18th birthday. It's the same everyday dental care, at no cost to the family, in a private practice setting.

What's covered

The free care covers the essentials that keep young teeth healthy: examinations, X-rays where needed, cleaning, fillings, and simple extractions. It's about keeping teeth healthy and catching small problems early, not cosmetic work.

If your teen ever needs something that sits outside the funded care, we'll tell you clearly and give you a written quote first, so there are never any surprises.

Why the teenage years matter for teeth

The teenage years are a common time for decay. Diets change, fizzy and energy drinks creep in, braces or crowding can make cleaning harder, and busy schedules get in the way of brushing. Regular visits during these years catch problems early and build habits that last into adulthood.

It's also a great time to make the dentist feel normal and calm rather than something to dread, especially for teens who are a bit nervous. We go at their pace.

How to enrol your teen with us

Getting started is easy. Get in touch and we'll help you enrol your teen for their free care and book their first visit. If they've been seen through a school or community service before, we can help you make the switch.

We're a family practice at the Auckland Airport Shopping Centre, with free parking at the door and open on Sundays, which makes it easier to fit around school and work.

The rest of the family too

While your teen is in for their free check-up, it's a good chance to sort the whole family. We look after all ages, and for adults we have a $79 first exam with digital X-rays, written quotes before any treatment, and help through Afterpay, Southern Cross, Work and Income and ACC where it applies.
