What clear aligners are and how they work
Clear aligners are a series of thin, see-through trays that fit over your teeth and move them a little at a time. You wear each set for around one to two weeks, then change to the next in the sequence. Because they are removable and close to invisible, many people find them easier to live with than fixed braces.
Aligners are made from a digital plan of your teeth. At Supertooth Dental Auckland we capture that plan using a Dentsply Sirona Primescan, a 3D intraoral scanner. Instead of a tray of putty and the gagging that often comes with it, we take a fast, comfortable digital scan. Accurate records help your aligners fit well from the start, which can mean fewer adjustments along the way.
Clear aligners for adults
Most adults who ask about aligners want to correct mild to moderate crowding, spacing or a bite that has drifted over the years, sometimes after having braces in childhood. Aligners can suit busy work and social lives because they are discreet, and you take them out to eat, brush and floss.
Aligners are not right for every case. More complex bite problems may need a different approach, and Dr Simran Chauhan, Principal Dentist (BDS), will tell you honestly if that applies to you. You will always receive a written quote before any treatment begins.
Clear aligners for children and teens (assessment-led)
For children and teens, timing and suitability matter more than the appliance itself. Some younger patients benefit from early treatment while the jaw is still growing, while others are better served by waiting or by a different type of treatment. There is no single answer that fits every child.
The starting point is an assessment. Dr Simran will look at how the adult teeth are coming through, the bite and the stage of growth, then talk you through the options in plain language. If aligners are not the right tool for your child, we will say so.
Why timing matters
Teeth and bites tend to drift further over time rather than settle. Addressing crowding or a bite issue earlier can sometimes mean a simpler, shorter course of treatment than leaving it for years. For children, some concerns are easier to guide while the jaw is still developing.
That said, earlier is not automatically better for everyone, and it is never a reason to rush. A careful assessment is what tells us whether now or later is the sensible time to act.
